Let’s get into today’s topic. The main thing I hear from my clients is that they feel STUCK. When it comes to their health, they really feel like they know what to do, but they don’t know where to start. And wouldn’t you agree that feeling stuck is the worst place to be?
 
So, the first part of coaching is to discover WHY they are stuck. To identify the obstacles that they keep running into over and over again.

Want to know one of the biggest obstacles that I’ve personally experienced AND the number 1 roadblock keeping my clients stuck? It’s MINDSET! Yep. Mindset. And ya’ll let me tell you that Mindset is everything. It determines our thoughts, our emotions, our beliefs based on those emotions. And then from those beliefs, actions are taken. Actions that include numbing our pain, hiding our insecurity and fear and putting a mask in place to act like we have got it all together. All those actions over time form those nice little things that we call habits. Habits shape our days and our days shape our entire life! Sound dramatic? Ever try to move forward when you are falling prey to negative thinking and feeling defeated? It doesn’t work! This is WHY MINDSET MATTERS!
 
Mindset can determine our chance for success…in life, in relationships, in work and most importantly in HEALTH. All aspects of health because Body, Mind and Soul; it all goes together.
 
Before we get into the 5 tips to transform your mindset and get you unstuck. I have a little funny story to tell you. You can imagine with me being in this Health world for So, long and getting a little over enthusiastic when I learn something new, my kids get some FREE guidance! Several years ago, I got to hear Jason Whitten speak. One of the greatest Dallas Cowboy players. His talk was phenomenal as he talked about the importance of mindset, visualization and the mind/body connection. So, I come home all excited and tell my 9 year old son all about it. And he is impressed that I got to hear Jason Whitten speak! Oh y'all I didn’t leave it there. I quickly laid out a plan of action for his baseball games. Telling him that this secret of mindset is what most pro athletes are focused on.  So, here I go coaching him on visualizing himself hitting the ball, telling himself is going to smack that ball and then doing it. You know the expression the body achieves what the mind believes. Oh yeah. I threw that one in there too! So, when JD would get up to bat, I would yell out, ”See it, Speak it, Do it! See it meaning visualize yourself hitting the ball, Speak it you tell yourself you are about it to hit it, and then do it.” You can imagine, with my accent and loud mouth, my baseball mom friends had a really good time teasing me about this. See it, Speak it, Do it! I would love to tell you that it just transformed his baseball game but honestly, I’m not sure.
 
So, if you are new here, allow me to point out a few things. This is a place for real talk about real struggles. And because you don’t need EXTRA stress, you will notice that these short podcasts will focus on small, realistic strategies. This is not the place for complicated, y'all.
 
Let’s talk about 5 ways to transform your mindset So, you can transform your health! Ready to get unstuck? Let’s go!
 
  1. 1. Self-Awareness - This is the most powerful first step. It’s looking closely at your thoughts, feelings, emotions, behaviors and habits. It’s realizing where you are So, you know where you need to go! So, often mindset is Something that we just don’t think about. So, this week, become more aware of your mindset, your attitude, your thoughts. Is there one main thought that is driving that overall mindset?

  2. 2. Spiraling thoughts - Speaking of that one thought. Have you noticed that our thoughts need to spiral. And they spiral down. It might begin with one thought like “I’m never going to be able to take control of my health” and then the thought spirals and we think about past health failures and the feelings of guilt and shame overtake us. This influences the decisions that we make, for instance…if I’m never going to be able to take control of my health, what’s the use in choosing a healthy lunch or making time for a walk. We tell ourselves it will always be this way. Those actions form habits, bad habits and that makes up our days and our lives! Another thing that plays into this is something that I call “running down the path of assumption!” Because of fear and guilt and shame and lots of other emotions, we automatically assume the worst! “I’m sure if I start to exercise more, I’m going to hurt my back and never be able to exercise again!” “I’ve never been able to lose weight, what would make this time any different?” We are assuming the absolute worst and I’m gonna tell you we do this with our relationships too! How can you stop the spiral and stop the assuming?? First recognize it and then do something about it! Shift gears baby. Change that perspective! Catch yourself and change your tune. These negative thoughts will never ever, ever result in a positive body! Quick note here...I’ve told you before about a free gift I have for you. 5 Secrets to Anti-Diet Weight Loss.   3. 3. Consider your Self-talk - What do you say when you talk to yourself? It’s interesting when I discuss this with clients. Most haven’t considered their self-talk. At all. I may hear, “I really don’t talk to myself I don’t think.” But when we start to unpack this. We see oh they are talking to themselves all right it is just that none of it is positive. It’s all negative. And they are So, used to the negative thought patterns that it is just a habit! Looking back I remember when I first started going to a gym called Orange Theory. I was pretty intimidated because of the running on the treadmill. Let me tell you, I’m not really a runner, like at all. But I started telling myself that I could do this and I started running those short bursts on the treadmill. I remember thinking one day as I was running, I’m doing it. I’m a runner. But then, something caught my eye and I happened to look at the girl on the treadmill next to me. Ya’ll...it was impressive. She was running like literally flying through the air, ponytail swishing. She looked like a gazelle because she was running So, quickly and So, gracefully. That did it for me. The negative self talk kicked in. I’ll never look like her. My legs won’t do that. Wait, what if I get thrown off this treadmill, that would be embarrassing. ALL these negative thoughts spiraling. Needless to say, I didn’t do very well for that entire class. But I realized that I really needed to work on my MINDSET and my SELF TALK. So,, when I would make the drive to the gym I would listen to something encouraging or motivational and then when I was running on the treadmill, I would repeat positive affirmations to myself…I’m getting leaner, stronger, healthier every day. I took a page out of Les Brown’s playbook. He is a popular motivational speaker and would tell myself…I can. I will. I must! It sounds crazy but it works. You can’t expect your body to have positive results when all you are saying to yourself is So, negative!

  4. 4. Shift your Mindset towards Healthy Habits - insert eye roll here, I get it. It sounds like mumbo jumbo but how can we continue to choose healthy food for instance when we have a certain mindset towards it. My client Vanessa said last week that she realized that her mindset towards healthy meals for her family was that it needed to be elaborate! Nope it doesn’t but she caught herself and that self-awareness helped me realize that she had a mindset towards healthy meals. Another client, Rachel had a realization that her mindset towards Healthy food was that healthy food is no fun! Again, that self-awareness and recognizing that disastrous mindset towards healthy food was pivotal. Allow me to insert a side note here……these two examples are very, very common! And I get it. So,, we have discovered that a little mindset shift and some good brainstorming goes a long way! What about your mindset towards exercise? This is where I’ve had to do some work. Previously I thought, I don’t have time to exercise. Thinking that it had to be an hour-long sweat session at the gym or I need to become a marathon runner. So,, in creating a different mindset, I’ve come to understand. All movement matters and even a little 15 minute session counts!

  5. 5. Look at your Environment - Much of our thought life and our mindset is a reflection of what we put in, what we are listening to, who we are hanging around. Ask yourself. How am I starting my day? Did you know that the first 20 minutes of your day sets the tone for the rest of the day?? I mean it makes sense. I’ve certainly seen a difference…my mood, my mindset is dramatically impacted when I start my day with social media, responding to emails, etc. instead of my quiet time with God! When I make my quiet time a top priority and spend it by reading scripture, a devotional, journaling, gratitude and prayer…I’m better able to handle what comes my way that day! Speaking of, I was in a little meeting one day with other health coaches and we were talking briefly about mindset. And someone said, you choose your mindset every day like you choose your outfit. That was such a great reminder to me. In the morning, I can choose my mindset like I choose my outfit! The other thing that we want to look at is who are you talking to?? Do are you hanging around with? Have you heard the quote, “You are the sum of who you surround yourself with”? Think about it. Are they constantly griping, complaining, arguing, all in all negative people? It has an impact on you, a dramatic one!
