Hey there! How are you feeling?
Consider this…Do you feel sluggish? Tired? No energy? Having frequent headaches or bathroom issues? Are you bloated?  Have some brain fog going on? Feeling like the Brittney Spears song, "Toxic" could be your theme song? These are just a few of the symptoms of toxicity in the body. And let me tell you, if your body is overloaded with toxins, you will not be able to lose weight! To protect itself, the body tucks away toxins in fat cells. So, if fat loss is your goal, then detox is a must!
The hot topic of detox is a big one and influencers & companies are making big time bucks selling us powders and potions to detox. I'm not saying all of those are bad, however, wouldn't it be nice to get some simple, realistic strategies so you can focus on non-scary detox right now? How about some common sense strategies that you can implement immediately without spending a ton of money? You are in the right place my friend.

How are you feeling? Anyone feeling toxic, sluggish, burdened, overwhelmed?  You feel heavy, yuck?  You want to lose weight but honestly you just want to feel better?  Keep listening Today’s topic is all about Toxicity and weight loss and I’m going to give you tips for easy, non-scary detox. Let’s detox it like it’s hot!

With a vast majority of us wanting to lose some weight and just feel better, we have to first look at what is standing in the way.  In my working one on one with clients, we get to take this detailed look into their life and their personal health to uncover those obstacles, those barriers that they keep running into over and over again.  My training in Functional Medicine, that really asks the question, Why, and seeks to get to the root of the issue really comes into play here.  For most, they have tried to lose weight before and have even been successful in those weight loss efforts but sadly it was all regained.  The overwhelming frustration combined with the guilt and the shame that comes with this weight fluctuation is maddening!
This is why we need to look at toxicity as a root problem and address that so that we can get our bodies working efficiently the way the good Lord designed it to work! 
 
Have you heard about where the body stores toxins?  It stores toxins in fat cells.  Our bodies are so amazing and so intricate and has protective mechanisms in place.  The body understands that toxins are detrimental and frankly toxic.  Poisons that pollute the system.  So in a effort to protect itself, it stores toxins in fat cells.  Yep, toxins tucked away in fat cells.  This interferes with hormone receptors and blocks the important messages that the hormones carry to the cells. These chemicals, these toxins in your body interfere with critical processes like balancing blood sugar, regulating metabolism, storing energy, endocrine function and metabolizing cholesterol.  I know…that’s kinda science-y.  Those body processes.  But what it means is that your body is not working efficiently and friend let me tell you, it’s hard to lose weight when your body is not working efficiently!

Oh and by the way, when those fat cells are full, there is some evidence that points to the fact that more fat cells are created. Oh yay!  You want to talk about jamming up the system, this is it.  And one last thing, you can see how years of storing toxins in your  adipose or fat tissues, and how it interferes with hormones that either help or hinder your bodies ability to lose weight is the reason why so many women have trouble losing weight as they get older!  Ummm…do I have your attention now?  Are you sitting there wide eyed thinking “no wonder!”
 
I asked you at the top of this podcast how you are feeling.  One of the most powerful tools that we have at our fingertips is mindfulness.  It’s that self awareness.  So I want you to check in with yourself and see how you are feeling.  Consider this…Do you feel sluggish? Tired? No energy? Having frequent headaches or bathroom issues?  Are you bloated?  Have some brain fog going on? Do you just feel toxic?  I can’t help but think of the Brittany Spears song, Toxic.  It literally kept running through my head while I was preparing this podcast. 
 
Toxicity is taking over our bodies and it is time for a DETOX.  What is detox you ask? So detoxing is basically trying to find balance in the body.  Balancing what is coming in vs. what is going out.  Its establishing a body of harmony.  Doesn’t that sound nice?  I love how harmony is defined as a pleasing arrangement of parts.  We want all of our parts working pleasantly.  Toxicity jams everything up, it is like there is sludge in the system and nothing is working right!
 
Got that visual in your head?  Let’s talk about where we are getting toxins from.  It’s anything  external or internal  that interferes with your good health. It's a barrier.  An obstacle. Within functional medicine, we talk about how a toxin is not just physical, but also mental and emotional.  Let’s unpack this a bit.
Physical….let’s look at our environment where we have the 3 basics; water, food and air.  Now we can get really detailed here and bogged down in the weeds.  And we will address the toxins in a future clean living podcast where we examine our beauty products, household products, the use of plastics, etc.  But I’m a firm believer in starting small.  So today we are going to focus primarily on food and water in our physical environment.

Mental & Emotional - what are we listening to, who are we hanging around, what are we watching, how much time are we spending on social media, what are we saying when we talk to ourselves. And most importantly in this category is stress.  The biggest, scariest monster toxin of all.  It often goes unrecognized as a toxin, but oftentimes it is the biggest thing that stands in our way.  When we are stressed, our adrenal glands are under pressure, cortisol and insulin are affected and this affects our body processes.  Meaning that we aren’t able to detox like we need to.  So stress absolutely MUST be addressed.  I will say that unmanaged or poorly managed stress is the #1 obstacle that I’m seeing in my clients.  You’ve heard me say this many times before, it’s not about reducing stress.  The things that are causing you stress aren’t going to suddenly disappear but we must manage the stress by helping the body dial back that stress response, the fight or flight mode.  Exercise, prayer, deep breathing, meditation, taking the time for rest, relaxation, fun.  What can you do to attack the monster toxin of stress?
 
Let’s move on to two primary ways to easy detox.  Clean it up and Drink it up! 

 1). Clean it up!  Here we are specifically looking at the foods we eat.  And it’s time to clean it up y'all.  Our busy lifestyles have led us to become dependent on quick, processed foods.  These processed foods are filled with toxins!  Artificial flavors, chemicals, preservatives, flavor enhancers, artificial colors, Not to mention sugar, gluten.  When you start to take a deep dive and look at what you are putting in your mouth.  You may be surprised.  I get asked so much about how to read a food label.  And what to look for, honestly; you need to be consuming those foods that don’t need a nutrition label.  All of the bright, beautifully colored fruits and vegetables.  But here’s my best tip, when you are looking at a food label and you need a chemistry degree to figure out the ingredients, well, “Houston, we have a problem!” 

Here’s another problem, because we live In a perfectionist, skinny obsessed, one size fits all, diet mentality, quick fix world we have a diet market that is booming!  I think you will notice this, in the grocery store, now that I’ve pointed in out.  Millions and millions of dollars are spent on clever marketing. Money spent to deceive you.  So that you think something is “healthy” when it is anything but!  They are using the popular trigger words…healthy, sugar free, natural, organic, gluten free, low fat.  It’s all clever marketing.  Most of these are still processed foods containing chemicals, toxins and junk.  Buyer beware. Instead, clean it up by sticking to real, whole foods.  Listening to a lecture one day, I heard an expert refer to this fresh produce as little srcubbers when it came to detox.  You consume fruits and vegetables and they are so powerful in so many ways and have like a little scrubbing affect in the liver, one of your main detox organs.   When thinking about our fruits and vegetables, I want you to EAT THE RAINBOW!!  No, not skittles!  But aim for a gorgeous variety of brightly colored, organic fruits and vegetables.  These are power packed with phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber.  These help your body both detox and work efficiently!  To clean it up, can you do a very strong focus on adding in more fruits and vegetables and have a specific amount of time that you are avoiding sugar, processed foods, processed carbs, gluten, dairy, alcohol and fast foods.  I’ve done 7-12 day detoxes like this and find that it is a great way to hit the reset button with your body. 
 
2).  Drink it up! I’m talking water y’all.  Good plain water.  Many of you are toxic because you are dehydrated.  There isn’t adequate fluids to flush out the nastiness.  When you take a close look at what you are drinking, what is it?  Are you relying on coffee, energy drinks, to get through the day?  Addicted to soda?  This is contributing to your toxicity.  A client of mine, Brandi, is a very successful and very busy real estate agent.  When we first started meeting and unpacking those daily habits, she realized that she was never drinking water.  And was relying heavily on energy drinks.  Now, because she is determined; she took the bull by the horns and quick those energy drinks cold turkey! And started making water a priority.  She literally went from one extreme to another and she saw a difference in how she felt! 

When we talk about weight loss, it is important to point out that even a 1-2% dehydration will make you more likely to hold onto belly fat.  No thanks! And how often do we mistake hunger for thirst?  We are actually thirsty!  I’m saying to drink it up and aim for 1/2 of your body weight in ounces.  And please skip the nasty foul additives to put in the water.  We are trying to detox not add to the toxicity. 

A super, easy idea to help with detox is to start your day by drinking 1-2 cups of warm lemon water as soon as you wake up.   Your body gets dehydrated during the night so this is a fantastic way to re-hydrate and promote detox and weight loss.  Water, it does a body good so drink it up, drink it up, y’all!
 
As we near the end of our time together today, I want to throw out some other non-scary, easy ways to promote detox.


  1. Sweat it out!  Sweat is one of the ways that our body naturally detoxes.  We will go into this further next week in part 2 but in the meantime, keep in mind that exercise is going to help you manage that stress and working up a sweat helps you detoxify!

  2. Take an Epsom salt bath.  Epsom salts contain Magnesium.  This powerful mineral is so crucial for detoxification and overall cellular health.  The Epsom salts help to draw out impurities and toxins.

  3. Consider dry brushing.  Heard of this?  It’s brushing for your body, not your hair.  Crazy, right?  Purchase a natural hair bristle brush and lightly brush the skin.  The stimulates lymphatic flow.  The lymph system is heavily invested in our detoxification.  I like to start at my feet and brush in the same direction 8-10 times always brushing towards my heart.  Dry brushing prior to an Epsom salt bath is a dynamic duo.  You are stimulating the lymphatic system to flow and then hopping in the bath where the salts are pulling out those impurities and toxins.  And, best part, your skin is going to feel amazing!!
